EPF balance online - Resolving the Invalid Member_id error / code not in list

While trying to check my EPF account balance online on http://www.epfindia.com, I got an error which says "Invalid Member_id / Data not updated against this". It took me a little while to figure out that the region code and office code have changed and my office pay slip was still showing the old codes (KN/BN/BMS/46499/098). Here is how I resolved the problem.

I went back to 'Check your balance' page and selected Karnataka in the "Select PF Office State" selectbox. Below it there was a list from which you have to select your EPFO Office. Here I got confused as my Office code (which is 3 character long) BMS was not there! I was not able to select the right EPFO office due to which I was getting the Invalid Member_id error.

To search the right EPFO office code I clicked on link "Search your establishment code here".

It presented a screen with quite a bit of information and options. The fourth option seemed promising which said- "I also know the establishment code". I knew my establishment code (Its a number of max 7 digits and 3rd piece of data in your epf code: region code/office code**/establishment code/**extension/account number). So I just entered it and got some records back in which my employer's name was right there on 3rd row with the new office code. The mapping of old-new was - KN/46499/ -> PY/BOM/46499/ which meant my new PF account number would be PY/BOM/46499/098.

I selected the new office code 'BOM' in the above EPFO Office list and entered other details. On submitting I got a sms with my EPF account balance information. Yippie!!

A Final Note: In the SMS EE amount means "Employee's contributed amount" and ER amount means "Employer's contributed amount".

where 0035224 is your establishment code and 536372 is your PF account number. Hope that helps.

Hello Manish, Your member id is correct - MH/BAN/0048475/000/3XXXX1. I verified it in establishment search. I am not sure why you are getting the mismatch error. Did you get your UAN from the current employer i.e. Tata consultancy?

Hello,
I was trying to transfer my PF , for which i have to login to Employee E-seva portal.
But after filling Establishment code info and when i click on GET DETAIL it says

Hi Neha,

I worked for an organization for almost 3.5 yrs from Nov 2009 to July 2013. I checked the balance last month in my PF account. it was like this:-
Employee Share : 81723
Employer Share : 54192
Pension Fund : 24345

I applied for the PF transfer from my last account to the current account. Now the situation is, just now i get a message from EPFI India, that the amount which got transferred is 150607.

What is the deal here ....... How do i find out that what is the calculation behind the amount transferred. Please help me.

Is your account new. I ask it because EPFO entries are usually not up-to-date and lag behind by an year or so.
That means if you have just opened your PF account it might take some months until you can see your balance.

I was working with this company in Gurgaon named AF MERCADOS EMI PVT LTD. I then shifted to Cognizant Technology Solutions. I had transferred my balance from the former to the later. In the portal, it is telling me the money has got transfered from the former company with PF ACCNT NUMBER HR/GGN/30574/39 but however i have no clue whether the money has got transfered or not. It will take some time to get your new account updated in computers. EPFO entries are not usually up-to-date but lag behind by around a year. So all you can do is wait for 2-3 months and check again.

Is your employer "LARSEN - TOUBRO LTD." ? If yes, then one of the three possibilities of codes should work. If still its not working I am not sure why? Please ask your employer's finance dept.

Hi Jagadeesh,

It seems from your PF number that your employer is exempted from contributing to EPFO. In case of exempted companies, PF balance could not be seen online because exempted companies deposit the EPF money in some PF trusts and not with EPFO. You need to check out with your employer regarding this.

Whether this message will show interest accumulated on the principal EPF amount as well for initial 36 months, in case the per account is 4-5 years?
(I.e: means that the epf account was of first company)

It means that the amount shown is not the current balance but the balance till last year (31/3/2013) EPF takes its own time to update the records and usually its delayed by an year.

This is typical of E-passbook. EPFO takes time to update the records, for eg. in my case the passbook downloaded on Jan 30th 2014, did not have any transactions for the year 2013 (all the records till Dec. 2012 were present)

Hello Neha, I worked for Honeywell from 2007 to 2010 and I moved to Hewlett Packard in 2010 and worked till June 2013. I didn't transfer my Honeywell pf account to HP. I resigned HP to go for higher studies. What is the process to merge both the pf accounts, so that I can use that after a couple of years? As I am not moving to any new company, I can't do the submitting form 10c for both companies to the new company..

Hi Pratiksha,

You can check your EPF amount on <a href="http://epfoservices.in/epfo/member_balance/member_balance_office_select.php">'Check your balance'</a> page. All you have to do is select Delhi as state and then Delhi(North) in the Office Name. Then in the 'Employee PF Account Number' fieldyou will see 2 pre filled blocks as 'DL' and 'CPM' and 3 vacant blocks. Just enter your establishment code (which is 31297) in the 3rd block, then 000 in the fourth block and then your PF account number (which is 5042) in the last block.

Follow the procedure mentioned in this post....For your help, your new pf number is EITHER TH/THA/0115764/000/ if your company address is 'A-203, KAILASH COMPLEX,PARK SITE, VIKHROLI (W)MUMBAI-79MUMBAI' OR TH/VSH/0115764/000 if your company's address is 'A-9, ELECTRONIC SADAN - 1 MIDC TTCINDUSTRIAL AREA, MAHAPENAVI MUMBAI - 410 210600MH'. I have searched this by entering your establishment code - '115764' in the 'search your establishment code' link. plz go through the entire post again.

You would need to submit a letter to EPFO office stating that the name in bank account is different. Please find the format of letter <a href="http://www.citehr.com/299072-different-names-pf-c-bank-c.html">here</a>. Hope it helps. It would be great if you let us know how it goes.

I had worked with Hotel Ashok Yatri Niwas, Delhi for almost 22years. Hotel had been sold out and employees were given voluntary retiremnt. Unfortunately, i cud not withdraw my epf at that time. Is it possible to withdraw it now? My epf account number is DL/7763/234 but it shows as invalid account on their website. Please help.

You can try contacting the regional EPF office. The contact numbers are given in <a href="http://www.epfindia.com/epfo_directory.html"> EPFO directory</a>. Tell them your case, they should help.

Hi,
I followed above steps and almost reached there. Portal asks for Name & Mobile no. After I specify name & mobile no. it gives me same error.

It instructs to enter same name as in EPF slip. Would like to clarify is name is case sensitive or whether it has to match exact same name as in there records?

Extension number is maximum 3 Characters (Eg.-AB, ABC, etc.). If it exists , it should appear after the establishment code. In case its not there, leave the field blank when checking status online. Hope it helps.

Thanks you yaar, it is really helpful. I was facing the same issue. But it helps me to find out my PF office which was not listed there within a single minuite. Old one was KN/0019214/000 and the new one is PY/KRP/0019214/000. I was selected "I know my extension" option only and enter "19214" which was showing in my old PF number as extension part, and it is unchanged in the new PF number as well. So you can also do the same in case not able to find out your PF office there.

Yes, the balance is inclusive of interest. (Accounts updates upto 31-03-2011) should mean the interest is accrued till 31-03-2011. Hope it helps.

Employee-employer contribution need not be same. Employee contribution will be 12% of the specified salary (basic+DA), while employer can opt to contribute either:
1) 12% of specified salary or
2) 12% of Rs 6500 i.e. Rs 780
