How much amount will you get on EPF withdrawal

When I got my EPF amount in my bank account, I was not sure whether its the right amount I claim. I have got the amount in 2 portions so I thought one would be the employee's contribution and the other would be employer's. But that way the calculations didn't match. Its only after a day of many failed attempts that I could match my amount correctly with my calculation. And what a joy it was! I got to know that one portion was the total EPF portion (i.e. my EPF contribution + employer's EPF contribution) while the other was the EPS (Employee Pension Scheme) portion.

After becoming EPF enlightened, I thought of sharing my wisdom ;) with you. If you want to calculate your EPF amount, here are the steps -

  1. Find out your PF contribution - It appears usually as 'PF deduction' in your salary slips. It will either be (a) 12% of your (basic + DA(if any)) or (b) 12% of Rs 15000/- i.e. Rs 1800/- (Rs 780 before Sep 2014)

  2. Find out employer's PF contribution - It is usually mentioned in the offer letter. If not there, ask your employer. It will either be (a) 12% of your (basic + DA(if any)) or (b) 12% of Rs 15000/- i.e. Rs 1800/-

  3. Understand the EPS component - Out of the above 12%, 8.33% goes in Employee Pension Scheme subject to a maximum of Rs 1250/- (Rs 541 before Sep 2014). So the actual amount that goes in EPF from employer's contribution is 3.67%. If your employer is contributing Rs 1800/- (12% of Rs 15000/-), then EPF portion will be 3.67% of 15000/- i.e. 550/-. While if your employer is contributing 12% of your (basic + DA(if any)), then EPS being capped at 1250/- , EPF portion will be = 12% of basic - 1250/-

  4. Understand the interest calculation - The interest on EPF is calculated as simple interest on monthly contributions and round to nearest rupee and then compounded yearly.

Please note that as of Jan 2018, there is talk of returning the profit made in stock market by EPFO to its subscribers/members. EPFO has been making small investments in stocks/equity since 2015 and this investment is around 32000 crore as of Nov 2017. The profit in stock investments can be transferred to member in terms of ETF units. As per last meeting of EPFO, it is supposed to be credited by end of March 2018. We will update the article to include more details about this in April 2018 or so.

Example EPF Calculation

Lets say my EE as well as ER contribution is 1800/- Out of employer's 1800/-, only Rs 550/- are going into EPF while the remaining Rs 1250/- are going into EPS. Lets say I joined in Nov. The interest calulation on my contribution for the first 5 months of employment is given below :

Date Accumulated Employee Contribution Monthly Interest @ 9.5%
1-Dec 1800 (This amount is the contribution of November which got submitted in PF account on 1st Dec) 0 (No interest earned as on 1st Dec because there was no PF balance before this date)
1-Jan 3600 (This amount is the contribution of Nov. and Dec. both : 1800+1800=3600) 14.25 (Interest is calculated on the amount which was there in the account before this date: 1800*9.5% /12)
1-Feb 5400 (3600+1800=5400) 28.5 (3600*9.5% /12)
1-Mar 7200 (5400+1800=7200) 42.75 (5400*9.5% /12)

This means my total contribution for the whole financial year is 7200/- and the interest is 85.5/- . The interest will be added to the contribution at the end of the financial year. So next year 7200/- + 85.5/- will become my opening balance and the calculation will go on like this. Similarly employer's contribution is calculated below:

Date Accumulated Employer Contribution Monthly Interest @ 9.5%
1-Dec 550 (This amount is the contribution of November which got submitted in PF account on 1st Dec) 0 (No interest earned as on 1st Dec because there was no PF balance before this date)
1-Jan 1100 (This amount is the contribution of Nov. and Dec. both : 550+550=1100) 4.35 (Interest is calculated on the amount which was there in the account before this date: 550*9.5% /12)
1-Feb 1650 (1100+550=1650) 8.7 (1100*9.5% /12)
1-Mar 2200 (1650+550=2200) 13.06 (1650*9.5% /12)

This means employer's total contribution for this whole financial year is 2200/- and the interest is 26.11/- . So next year 2200/- + 26.11/- will become the opening balance and the calculation will go on like this.

Note: To know the EPF interest rates for a particular year, see this post : EPF Interest Rates

EPS calculation

If you have filled the withdrawal option in Form 10C, you would get a EPS portion back. Here are some facts:

  1. The EPS part (which is a part of the employer's contribution) does not earn any interest.

  2. On EPS withdrawal you do not get the full EPS amount. The amount depends on number of years of service, and is not related to actual balance in EPS Fund. The withdrawal amount is governed by Table ‘D’ (given below).

  3. The fraction of service for six months or more is treated as one year and the service less than six months is ignored. So 3 years and 6 months will be rounded upto 4 years and 3 years, 2 months will be rounded to 3 years.

Table D

Years of Service Proportion of wages at exit
1 1.02
2 1.99
3 2.98
4 3.99
5 5.02
6 6.07
7 7.13
8 8.22
9 9.33

Example EPS Calculation:

I had completed 1year 5 months in my previous company, so for the purpose of EPS calculation my 'years of service' will be counted 1 year. My monthly salary was > Rs 15000 per month but for purpose of EPS only Rs 1250 p.m or Rs 15000 annually is considered. So the EPS amount that I got back was 1.02*15000 = Rs 15300/-

With the above information on your fingertips, I hope you would be able to solve your EPF - EPS mystery. Wish you good luck!

News on PF Interest Rates

As we near the end of year 2017 and start of 2018, EPFO is trying to make few main action items - 1) complete the linking of aadhaar with UAN during 2018, 2) provide direct linking of epfo investment in equity market to individual employee. This will help in delivering the stock market gains as part of epf return

21st December 2017

EPFO slashes interest rate to 8.65% for 2016-2017

EPFO has decided to cut down the PF interest rates for financial year 2016-2017 to 8.65% from the current 8.8%. This is the lowest rate in four years and the decision was taken in light of falling interest rates worldwide. Finance Ministry needs to ratify the decision after looking at the current financials of EPFO. The final notification on interest rate by finance ministry should come by February 2017.

20th December 2016

EPF interest rate rolled back to 8.8% for 2015-2016

Following the strong opposition from trade unions, government has to rollback its decision to give 8.7% interest on PF deposits. The interest rate for financial year 2015-2016 is now fixed at 8.8%. It was 8.75% in the previous financial year and government wanted to lower it on the grounds of market volatility and the global economic slowdown.

    Hi neha,

Thanks for the post, need ur help.
I left my job after 4.6 years in july 2012 from MNC. at that time, i didn't apply for the pf withdrawal as it was in account & i expected interest will be added. I applied the pf withdrawal in feb 2015, which was rejected by pf office on the basis that they already settled the account in nov 2012. Which was shocking for me!!! On raising the complaint to pf office & to my previous employer, it was told that they had transferred the amount in some one else account whose name was same & left the organization in same year.
Then they contact that person & transffered the amount in my account on 12 april 2015,
Now, as per pf office they had transferred rs 66430(epf) +30120 in nov 2012 to wrong account.
But now in april 2015, after 2.5 year of leaving the job, i got 68318(epf) + 30102(pension).

Question is what should be correct amount in today date if net amount was 66430(epf) only in nov 2012 ?
As no contribution towards this account after aug 2012, what is the total interest amount on this? Who will pay this amount?

    Dear Neha,

Many many Thanks to you for such a beautiful explaination, but i don't know why Table D is not working in my case. Please help in my EPS case. My date of joining is 01.04.2014 & date of leaving job is 31.12.2014. My monthly contrybution is Rs.541/- for EPS. But when I am withdrawn my EPS amount I got only RS.3876/- instead of Rs.4869/-. I know that there is Table “D” formulate the amount, but still amount is not matched. Can you explain me the calculation. My basic salary is 6500/-.

    Thanks & Regards,

I have worked from march,2009 to march 2011. its completed two years. I applied PF return in DEC,2014. i got the PF amount into my account yetsurday. But really its very less amount. first year PF cutting my salary was 1,440*12=17,280 and 2 years was 1627*12=19524. This amount is cutting from account every month for two years. Company can also contribute same PF amount every months. So total PF amount would Rs. 17,280+17,280+19,524+19,524.

But i got the Rs.11876. Please advice, why less amount is credited into my account. if i calculate the interest rate. Interest is going to be more than credited amount.

    Hi,
i worked for X company for 2.7 years and switched to Y company. I transferred my EPF account from old company to new company through Online Trasnfer...
i worked for Y company 1.6 years and switched to Z company.
Now is there any chance to transfer my old PF amount alone to Z company and withdraw pension fund contribution from previous employer.
If Yes which form need to submit and also by Online Transfer last time is Pension Fund contribution also transferred to new company ( in my case Y ) or need to submit one more form to my first company (X)..

    Please clarify on this.

Hi Neha, Really very nice and informative article. I worked for 5 years in the previous company and from last 3 years in current company. I had submitted Form 13 through my previous employer so that EPF amount in my previous EPF account will be transferred to current EPF account. Just after couple of weeks I received SMS from EPFO as below:

"Form 13 (Transfer) Claim ID: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX approved for payment through Cheque. Pmt under process."

But after that I don't know what to do and where to do follow up.
If you have any idea, please can you tell me what to do next?

My previous account was idle from last 3 years, and so now EPFO will not calculate and deposit interest in my old account. [After 900 days EPFO dont calculate/deposit the interest].

This can be avoided if the amount gets transferred from old account to new account before 31 March 2015.

Any help would be highly appreciated.
    Best Regards,
    Nikhil

I have resigned my previous company and its been 2years now and now I have a total ok 4years experience. So when withdrawing pf from my previous company account, will my 4years experience will get counted for EPS calculation?
Also, I see interest is getting added annually to pf account, so EPF what ever amount(my share and part of company share) is shown in the passbook will be the final amount that we will get when with drawing, I am right?

I have completed 6 years service in my old company now 3 months over since i quite job and now i am thinking of withdrawing the pf amount should i keep my pf rest with the pf a/c or shall i withdraw? if i don't take it will i get interest for the rest of the years until i wish to withdraw , my pf balance is 201450 rupee both employee and employer what interest i get each year, is there any time frame for pf withdrawal can i withdraw immediately after i leave my service or shall i wait for another 2 , 3 years will you please clarify it
  • neha
    22 Nov 14
You can withdraw it anytime only condition being you are unemployed at the time of withdrawal. Regarding interest, interest will stop after 3 years of non-activity in the account. So it is advisable to withdraw the amount within 3 years of leaving service.

Hi Neha, Lets say I have completed 4 years in same organization and now I would like to apply for PF withdraw including pension. Now here, Pension amount will be multiple by 3.99 as per Table D? Lets say Pension amount is 50000. So will it be 50000*3.99=199500?
    Please rpl.

NO, please read the post again. Pension amount is not multiplied by the wage factor. Its the annual basic salary (capped at 6500/-) which is multiplied by wage factor.

    Hi Neha,

This particular blog\post is really wonderful. Your explanation is butter smooth without any confusion.
I have a query: I worked for a company for 3 years 10 months and if I happen to check all the 46 payslips for the PF deduction from my salary it is around 50,987(roughly) rupees but when i checked the PF balance online it shows me 2 components EE amount-52988 and ER 25427.
    Now my question is
EE amount is the employee contribution ?
ER is the employer contribution ?
Does the PF balance online does not show EPS amount ?
The EE and ER amount is calculated with interest ? as shown online ?
    Can i consider my EPS amount to be EE-ER = 27561 ?
Ideally if I withdraw my PF amount I should be getting Amount= (EE+ER+EPS) - Applicable tax

Note: My and my employer contribution is same as mentioned in the offer letter.

Thank you very much and waiting for your feedback.

    1) Yes, EE amount is the employee contribution and ER is the employer contribution.
    2) Yes, PF balance online does not show EPS amount.
    3) Yes, the EE and ER amount as shown online, is calculated with interest
    4) Yes, your EPS amount would roughly be EE-ER .
5)If you withdraw, your PF amount would be = (EE+ER+ a portion of EPS calculated acc to Table D). I don't think EPFO has started tax deduction at source. You are liable to pay taxes on the amount you get.

    Hope I answered all.

    Hi,
Your post is quite informative, and this responsive discussion forman gave me the courage to post my query.
I worked in org#1 (EPFO office at K R Puram, bangalore) for 4.1 years, then I changed my job in July'2010. This new org#2 also has their PF at KR pram, bangalore EPFO branch. I applied for my PF transfer in Jan'11. After waiting for 2 years, when I reached my current office for the status of PF transfer they said, it takes 2-3 years so you should be paitent. In march'14 I check on-line, it showed status (as of March'12) that my PF was rejected; reason- it was not properly stamped/signed by my current employer. My employer says they have stamped and signed duly. But till now neither me nor any of previous or current employer got any rejection form from PF office. So I though of re-applying , and I did 3 months back, again it was rejected saying The NAME and NUMBER mismatched and the rejection letter was sent to my previous employer. Now I went to the PF office personally, they told me everything matches, name and number and someone must have accidently rejected it.
My query is how can I get the interest for the period, from when my account has become dormant/inactive...as I have duly applied for the PF transfer on time and because of someone mistake at PF office I am loosing my interest.

    Please help/guide.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    regards,
    rashmi

    Hi Neha,
Thanks a bunch for your prolong support in this subject. Hope you will be able to clear my doubt regarding the EPS amount I have just received.
I have worked in the X organisation from 9-july-2012 till 6-Jan-2014, so I guess I was just 2 days shy of 1 year 6 months. My employer's contribution to EPS was 541 per month. I have just received 6539 exact, I believe that is the EPS only and EPF part will be credited subsequently.
Now, my doubt is that, as per calculation, my EPS should have been :
1.02*6500= 6630....considering that only 1 year of service is considered.
So, is Tax deducted from the amount or what?
And shall I be eligible for 1.99*6500= 12935....that is considering 2 years of service as EPF was deducted for 18 months only?
Will be greatful if you can clarify...
    Thanks...
  • neha

    01 Jun 14
You will get 47631+14571+EPS part which is calculated as shown in the post. The difference in ER amount is because only 3.67% of employer's contribution goes in EPF fund , the rest 8.67% goes in EPS

Please read the post to understand.

    Hi
I have served in one organization for more than 10 years across multiple cities. Hence I had separate PF accounts in each city I have worked in. My latest PF account is active since 2009. Now that I have transferred the total EPF balance from my previous accounts to the latest one, Will I be eligible to withdraw EPS post my separation? Considering the rule of >10 yrs service one can't withdraw EPS but I'm just thinking that since my latest account is around 5 years in operation, I may be eligible. Your views please.

Wanted to know EPFO penalty if PF withdrawn with immediate job change. This is after working 10 years in a single company & then resigning and taking up a new job within a few days. Considering it is our money kept with EPFO, should there be a penalty?
  • neha
    01 Jun 14
I don't know what is the penalty but according to laws you are not supposed to withdraw on changing jobs. You should transfer the old account's money to the new account.

The reason behind it is that EPF is maintained with govt. to provide retirement benefits to the employees. If you withdraw the sum while working, it defeats the whole purpose.

    Dear sir,
I have left the previous organisation in less than 2 years. I dont want PF to be withdrawn,
    A) So do we get interest on accumulated amount though i have left that organisation?
    B) If i withdraw it after 3 years so will it be non-taxable as amount would be there in account for 5 years?
thanks in advance for the advice.

    Hi Komal,

    A) Yes, you will keep getting the interest but only for the next three years. After that your account will become inoperative and will not receive any interest.
    B) Yes, after 5 years of service, its non-taxable.

Sir, My EPF starts from 01 April 2006. I resign the job on 31 June 2011. Now I want to withdraw complete amount i.e. (employee share + Employer Share + Pension Fund) Now I am again in another job, and the present company is not deducting any EPF. So I want to close the old account.
How is it possible. Can I get full amount, if yes then pl. let me know the procedure.

    Thanks
  • neha
    09 May 14
Going by the laws, you can withdraw only if you are unemployed. Although many people, who switch jobs, withdraw PF of previous company but it is not allowed as per act. As you are working, I would suggest you transfer your account. But if transfer is not possible for any reasons then apply for withdrawal. For procedure read - /finance/pf-withdrawal-form19-form10c-instructions. For full amount calculation read - /finance/calculation-of-epf-amount-with-interest

I was employed for 4 years and 3 months. My EE is 49674 and my ER is 25987 as of 3 years and 9 months - as per the message received from EPFO. I dont know what my 10c pension amount is . I received sms informing me that both my EFP and 10c claims have been sent for payment. I received 9975 from EPFO yesterday. I calculated the 10c amount based on teh calculations you have provided. Even if the amount was 521 per month, my 10c amount for 50 months should be more than 10K. Is PF payed i installments now ? if yes how is the first installment of 9975 calculated ? In how many days can i expect the rest ? Do they send us a detailed doc on how the amount was calculated ?
  • neha
    07 May 14
    Hi Joseph,

If your basic salary was > 6500/- at the time of leaving , then your EPS should be around 26K. EPFO does not send any document regarding the calculation of amounts. However they provide the E-passbook facility wherein you can verify the amounts. Read more about E-passbook - http://www.humlog.net/finance/epf-account-online-e-passbook

But my monthly contribution was 780 and same amount contribution from my previous company, I worked there 15 months so total contribution was 23400. So why has less amount credited that actulal?
Please help me to understand that.

Out of 780/- of employer's contribution, only 239/- goes in EPF the remaining portion goes in EPS. Please read the full post to understand it.

Yes, the full amount amount comes in 2 instalments. Sometimes the time difference between 2 instalments can be a month. So I would suggest you to wait.

    hi,
Thanks for providing the detailed explanation.
    Below are my queries:
    1) As the EPS is restricted to 541/- per month does that means any thing extra would go to EPF contribution?

    2) I was working with company X from June 2008-November15th 2012 and then joined another company from November19th - presently. I have applied for transfer of My EPF however, it is still pending. Please suggest if i should wait for the transfer or apply for withdrawal? if i withdrew the money will it be taxable.
  • neha
    14 Apr 14
    1) Yes, anything above Rs 541/- will go towards EPF contribution.
    2) Legally you can withdraw only if you are unemployed. So I suggest get your account transferred.

My opening balance on 31/03/2009 was 27005 (EE) + 18486 (ER). Now in year 2009 - 2010 my total epf contribution was 23664 (EE) + 17172 (ER). So the amount on which I should be getting interest is 50669 (EE) + 35658 (ER). And the respective interest should be 4306.87 (EE) + 3285.93 (ER): interest rate for 2009 - 2010 was 8.5%. But the passbook says 3225 (EE) + 2248 (ER). Difference of 1081.87 (EE) + 1037.93 (ER). Can anyone clarify, why is my pass book showing this difference?

    Thanks/ BR
  • neha
    25 Mar 14
The interest on EPF is calculated monthly and not yearly. You are calculating yearly on full year's contribution which is not the way its done. It is calculated as simple interest on monthly contributions and round to nearest rupee and then compounded yearly.
Please see example calculations in my post to have a clear idea of what I mean.

    Hi,

My name is Pankaj. I left my present organization after 9 months and 19 days. Pf deduction is Rs. 780.00(as per salary slip).
    just confirm the below:

    I would get (780+780)*9 months=1560*9=14040+int.

please confirm whether the above logic is rt or wrong..
  • neha
    24 Mar 14
No. The full employer's share does not go in EPF. A part goes to pension fund too. So from 780/- Rs. , only 239/- goes in epf. Your calculation would be : (780+239)*9 + int

1.If I withdrawl l my PF then it is liable for tax as 5 yrs is not completed. If I donot withdrwal it and leave it for another 8 months so that 5 yrs get completed then is it liable for tax?
2.If i transfer PF to my current orgnaisation then after 8 months ,I am able to withdrwal of that money as it's get complted 5 yrs of contionous service.
3.Is it mandatory to withdrawl both PF amd EPS.If I want only withdrawl PF and want to transfer EPS to cureent orgnisation ,is it posible.
  • neha
    24 Mar 14
    Hi Abhishek,

Yes, if you withdraw EPF before 5 yrs of service, it will attract tax. However, after 5 years completion, its tax free. As per law, you can withdraw EPF only if you are not employed anywhere. I would suggest that since you are currently working somewhere, you transfer you EPF from previous company to new company.
It is not mandatory to withdraw EPF or EPS.

Guys, i have noticed most of the people donot know how to get their hard earned money because of complexity in govt process, here is some clarity on PF, gratiuty and EPS-
1- your PF is the combination of funds deducted from your salary+employer's contribution of same amount, if you want to withdraw it after 5yrs of continuous service its non taxable, for the details of funds accumulated, visit epfo wesite, register yourself and get a full statement of you pf account, its very easy now a days and called as pf passport.

2- gratuity can be claimed anytime after 4 yrs and 8 months of continuous services , few people say it can be withdrawn only after 5 yrs. which is not true, it happened with me, got it before five years.

3- EPS can be withdrawn with PF if your services is less than 10yrs by filling form 10C.

Hi I worked for 2.2 years (26 months) for one MNC on contract basis from Jan 2011 to March 2013.
I applied for PF in June 2013.below is the description of PF: (484 for 11 months & 897 for 15 months)
    484X2=968. for 11 months: 968X12=10648
    897X2=1794. for 15 months: 1794X15=26910
    Total: 10648+26910=37558.
Now my question is, how much interest I will get?
    because 2 months back I got two SMS back-to-back: one for 9000 & another for 20000. Total=29000.
but still some amount is remaining. And I am totally confused when trying to calculate PF@8.7%.
Can someone here please help me getting this understand.

    Thanks, Swapnil.
  • neha
    09 Feb 14
    Hi Swapnil,

    Employee contribution = 484 *11 +897*15 = 18779 . this is the principal amount without interest
    Employer contribution: EPF part @ 3.67% out of 12% = 484*11*(3.67/12) + 897*15*(3.67/12) = 1628+4110 = 5738

The numbers should match if you do the calculation based on above.

    Hi Neha,

Its a nice article and very helpful to all.

Please clarify about the EPS amount.

If let us assume that i worked for 2 years and 3 months in a company and if my contribution to the EPS account is Rs.500 for each month for the first year, Rs.600 for each month for the second year and then Rs.700 for the remaining 3 months each. Then as per your article, i will get the EPS amount as below

    Rs.500 x 12 = Rs.6000
    Rs.600 x 12 = Rs.7200
    Rs.700 x 3 = Rs.2100

So i have worked for less than 2 and half years, my years of service in company is rounded to 2 years. so the EPS amount which is Rs.2100 is considered or not?

    If not then is my EPS amount which i will get is like Rs.13200 (Rs.6000 + Rs.7200) x 1.99 = Rs.26268?

    Please reply.
  • neha
    07 Feb 14
    Hi PPR,

EPS Amount is part of employer's contribution. You DO NOT contribute to EPF. Furthermore, it is capped at Rs. 541/- monthly, an employer cannot contribute more than that. So if you have worked for 2 years and 3 months in a company and your basic salary was greater than Rs. 6500/-, then your EPS amount would be 6500*1.99 = 12935/-

    Hope it clears your doubt.

    Hello Neha,

    Thanks for the reply,,,

I got you but still i have doubt. That is if i work for 2 years and 3 months and my basic salary for the first 2 years are less than Rs. 6500/- each and for the third year it is more than Rs. 6500/- and for the first year EPS amount is suppose Rs. 200/- for each month and for the second year EPS amount is Rs. 400/- for each month and for third year it is capped to Rs 541/- for each month then what would be the total EPS amount which i receive.

    Appreciate your reply.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi Neha,

My completed period on my last organization for EPS part was 01-July-2007 till 12-Aug-2013, if i calculate the completed years it comes 6 Years and 12 Days, rounding off to 6 Years for calculation purpose and my max cap of wages is 6,500 and my entire EPS contribution is Rs 40034, Recently i applied for EPF&EPS withdrawal and i received only Rs 38,915 only and i do not understand how come it be so. My questions are.

    Case 1 : it should be 40034,
    Case 2: it should be 6.07 X 6500 = 39,455

it neither fits in any of above? pls suggest what might have went wrong?
should i have to register a grievance with EPF office Pls suggest?

Your prompt reply will be highly appreciated.

    Regards

    Hi Venkat,

Yes, going by the table D it looks appropriate that you should have got 6.07 X 6500 = 39,455. I dont know whats wrong here. May be they had changed the 'proportion of wages at exit' in Table D. I could not find anything on internet regarding this.
However, you can always register a grievance with EPFO.
Let me and the readers here know as and when you find your answer.

    Sincere Thanks

Your post is really very helpful. I need a small clarification on the withdrawal of the PF amount. Am working with an organisation for more than 5 year, now i would like to withdraw from my PF account to buy a plot please let me know how much amount can i claim from my EPF? Also advise if i can withdraw even from EPS for this purpose if so how much will i be able to claim?

You can do advance withdrawal of EPF amount only (not EPS ). Details <a href="http://www.epfochennai.tn.nic.in/advances_withdrawls.html">here</a>. <a href="http://www.indianrealestateforum.com/real-estate-noida/t-epf-withdrawl-purchase-flat-23736.html">Related link.</a>

I have filled the withdrawal option in Form 10C, I was employed for 4 years and 1 months and EPS contribution for the same is almost 541*49=26,509 and e-passbook also shows the same amount. Yesterday i recieved money and it is 25,935 which is even lesser than my contribution.According to the chart given above it should be 3.99*26,509=1,05,770. How is it calculated and whom should i contact if there is mismatch. Please suggest.

Then later in May 2013 i have applied for withdrawal of the amount, but the issue is that my PF amount is held by the company itself in the form of a trust and i am unable to know how much amount is there in my PF account. Neither am i able to know the status of my PF withdrawal form, my previous employer is not responding properly. Request you to kindly help me out as to what i will have to do to get to know my status.

Myself is Somen and I'm working in Pune. I've 3.1 yrs service record in company when I left the company i.e. on 6th sep 2011. I've send my PF withdraw form on 13th Aug 2013 but company has deducted
30.90 % tax from the PF amount and they are showing the cause that I've only 3.1 yrs service record in company that’s why they are deducting the tax, if I continue my job in company for 5 yrs then the tax would not be deducted. But I’ve submitted the withdrawal form after 5 yrs, still the company is denying that. I like to know that whether they are correct in this issue or not. If they are not correctly saying then what can I do to retrieved my deducted amount ? please let me know as soon as possible.

My PF A/C open Aug 2008 and left the company 6-Sep-2011, send my PF withdraw form on 13th Aug 2013.

    Please share EPS calculation details.
     Total service period – 3.1 yr(37 Months). 541/- every month deducted.

    Hi Neha,

After seeing so much of reply from you in this thread, i felt hapiness that i may get my answers soon.

I worked for an organization (1st org) where PF is kept in EPF trust. I worked for four years and moved to larger

organization (2st org) where the PF is maintained by its own trust. There is no EPS here. Only EPF by employee and

employer. Later the company split into two (3rd org) and the PF is moved to EPF trust.

Now the problem for me is,
    1) where is the EPS deposited from my 1st org had gone ? are they transfered as part of EPF transfer from 1st to 2nd org ? how i can find this?
I see 50% difference, i.e, employee EPF contributon was 40K and employer contribution was 20K (from 1st to 2nd org)

    2) Now I have 12 years of service. If the EPS from the PF trust is still there, will I be able to withdraw/transfer to the current EPS held by my current organisation (3rd org)?

    Kindly help me.
    Thanks

I am retiring on August 31, 2013 after completing 35 years of contributing to EPF and am already getting EPS pension. My EPF balance on April 1, 2013 was Rs.70 lakhs. The total EPF contribution from my side and my employer side is RS.30000 per month during last 5 months. Which date should I submit Form 19 for final settlement to reduce loss of interest due to processing time. Will I get interest on my 70 lakhs and contributions this financial year till the date of submission of Form 19? Or is it better to submit Form 19 in April 2014?

    Hi,
As i understood with EPS calculation please correct my understanding on below queries.

    1. No.of years (Based on Table D ) * 6500- Even though my basic is more than 6500 is it calculated as 6500 because it is the max limit.
    2. If it is more than 10 years and if i didn't with draw EPS amount what will happen with that amount.
Will i get that amount at the time of closing the PF account.

    Thanks,
    Manikantas
  • neha
    26 Jul 13
    1. Correct. 6500 is the max limit.
    2. You will become eligible for receiving pension after the age of 58 years on production of scheme certificate in the department. However, the maximum Pension per month is subject to maximum of Rs 3,250 per month.

    Hello,

I am presently working with an organisation for last 11 years.

    2 quires:

    1. Before applying for PF Advance:

I applied for PF Advance to purchase site. Before applying I had checked the balance through sms at epfo and received sms info
(i.e as EE Amt: Rs.3.63 lac, ER Amt: Rs. 2.7 lac approx as on 23-3-13 [a/c updated on 31-3-12]).
    - The site value is 7 lac.
    - 24 months (Basic+DA) is more
    - Balance in PF is 6.33 lac
    - Applies amount is 6.3 lac (which is less) but amount got transferred is 6 lac.

    2. After registering at epfo downloaded the EPF Account Passbook to check the balance and it shows:

    as on 28-6-13
    Deposited:
    EE: 408486
    ER: 305343

    Withdrawn:
    EE: 437700
    ER: 162300

    Pension Fund: 70330

    Closing Balance as on : 23/07/2013 08:23:08
    Employee Share : -29214
    Employer Share : 143043
    Pension Fund : 70330

    So the Question:
    - Why not 6.3 lac and 6 lac
    - Why EE is showing in minus and ER is showing 1.43 lac
    - Why sms showed 6.33 and not what passbook shows
    - According to the EPF Passbook balance it is more the 7 lac and site value is 7 lac. If I was known I would have asked for 7 and not 6.3 lac.
    - Is there any way I can get that balance amount (not Pension Fund)

When I inquired at PF office they said we can withdraw 100% (not Pension Fund)

    Thank you.

  • neha
    26 Jul 13
    1. The maximum amount you can avail of is 24 times your salary. May be because of that.
    2. No idea.
    3. sms was showing records till 31-3-12 while Passbook is showing the latest status. There must have been additional deposits every month (+ interest on it ) in this period.
    4. I dont think you can withdraw now because this facility can be availed just once during the entire service. <a href="http://www.epfochennai.tn.nic.in/advances_withdrawls.html">Details</a>

The EPFO did not give any details of the components in the amount I received at withdrawl. And mine was less than 5 years of service making me more anxious to know what the tax implications are. Thanks to you, Neha. This post and the one where you talk about interest rates over the years helped me make some sense of the figures. God bless you :)...
Even if the employer and employee contribution is supposed to be 12%, the amounts may not match. One can roughly deduce the employer contribution by subtracting EPS component (Rs. 541 per month * number of months) from the total employee contribution. Your post helped immensely!

hello...i quit this company which i joine in 19 may 2003..i resigned on 28th may 2013 and was relived on 1 june 2013...10 years of service..
my gratuity has been settled..now for pf i have 2 questions..

    1) as per my pf slip my pf no D0281X that is emp code followed by x...however i tried to get the status online epf but it is not accepting alphanumeric...i wrote many mails to company for my pf a/c no..they always rvert with the same a/c no..is the employee pension scheme number and pf number same?

    2) since i am unemployed i opted for PF wdrawal..i read somewhere that if you wdraw you woudnot get the employers contribution amount on wdrawal..is that true..i mean say for e.g my pf balance was 8 lac rs..so will i get all 8 lac or 8 lac minus employer contri for these 10 years.

I had 11 years eligible service and completed 50 years of age. In my scheme certificate, my last salary and pensionable salary shown as 6500. What will be my actual pension if I opt for pension now.
  • neha
    28 Jul 13
The amount of pension you get depends upon a fixed formula, which is average monthly salary of the last year of service multiplied by the number of years of service divided by 70. Remember your employer shows your salary as Rs. 6,500 for EPS, so the pension is calculated on a monthly salary of Rs. 6,500. So if you have worked for say 35 years, your monthly pension will come to Rs. 3250 [(Rs. 6,500 X 35 years)] ÷ 70 according to the formula. Thus, the maximum pension per month is subject to maximum of Rs. 3,250 per month. <a href="http://www.indiainfoline.com/PersonalFinance/Articles/Little-known-facts-about-EPF-and-EPS/38325056">Read here</a>

    Hi neha,

Thanks for such a wonderful post..
    Please help me on this!
I was working for a pvt organization from july 2011 to mar 2013.
Today I received my provident fund amount, but it is much less than what I evaluated.
My EPF balance till Nov 2012 was around INR 53,500, and I left the job on 02 mar 2013. The amount which has been credited is only INR 59,128.

I came to know that the FPF amount that should have been credited would be (6500*2.05=INR13,325) in itself.

But why I got so much less amount?

Is INR 59,128 the total part i.e. EPF and FPF that has been credited, or only the EPF part?

  • neha
    18 Jun 13
    Hi Dheeraj,

You will get the amount in two parts so whatever amount you have got should be just the EPF part. Acc. to Table D you will get 1.99*6500 as your EPS amount.

please provide me eps calculation if total service is two years one month in which salary is for first two months is 5000.00 pm, next 10 months is 6000.00 pm and next thirteen month is 6600.00 pm.

what is total withdrawl amount eps ?
  • neha
    17 Jun 13
As mentioned in the post, out of your 12% contribution to PF, 8.33% goes in Employee Pension Scheme (subject to a maximum of Rs 541/-). But at the time of withdrawal you dont get the full EPS amount but only get a fraction of it depending upon the number of years served. Table D is used for getting to that fraction. To calculate withdrawal benefit that fraction is to be multiplied by your last drawn salary, subject to a ceiling of Rs. 6500

So in your case, rounded years of service=2, fraction = 1.99. Hence withdrawal amount would be 1.99*6500
  • Mahesh
    19 Jul 14
So Since we only get fraction of EPS on withdrawal, when do we get the full amount for EPS?

It will depend on number of years of service and will be calculated based on table D. To calculate withdrawal benefit there is a factor in Table D which is to be multiplied by the last drawn salary, subject to a ceiling of Rs. 6500

As your basic salary is 4500 so your monthly PF contribution will be 4500*12/100=540 so your total contribution for 2yrs and 5 months is 540*29=15660. and for employer's monthly contribution is 540 which is totally paid towards EPS. So amount you receive is might be for EPF part only with interest and remaining amount of EPS will be get later.
  • neha
    16 May 13
    Hi Sowmya,

Yes, the amount you got seems to be less. Can you tell me the exact amount contributed by you and your employer? It should be written in the salary slip. Your EPS part alone will come out to be 12935/- (1.99*6500) .

If you are not satisfied with the amount you got, the only way left for you is to file an RTI (only after filing an EPF grievance redressal form). For details see : <a href="http://www.jagoinvestor.com/2012/03/rti-for-epf-withdrawal-or-transfer.html">File an RTI application for EPF withdrawal </a>

    Hi Neha,

My friend recently resigned from her job and she wants to withdraw her PF , but her company claims that rules have changed and you cannot withdraw your PF anymore , you can just have it transfered. The PF in your account will be accumulated and only can be withdrawn at the time of retirement i.e at the age of 55 years or in case of some specific conditions.

As your post seemed very latest so just thought of sharing as I dont think this of accurate information.

There are no rule changes regarding withdrawal of EPF as per my knowledge. You can withdraw your EPF if you are unemployed at the time of withdrawal. The EPF site itself has withdrawal forms for download purpose.

I have seen 4973 is deducted from my monthly salary. I was working for 17 months and the total PF deducted approximately Rs 84541 /- . I applied for withdraw and I filled 10c and 19 forms. I have got only Rs 12,935 . I am totally confused and worried so much. Please let me know, am I got 10c claim or form 19 claim? Is the pf office deposit the amount in single slot for both? Hi All,
I left my first organization after serving them for 2 years 11 months and 29 or 30 days in Nov 2009. I left my second organization after serving them for around 10 months in Sep 2010. I applied for their PF transfer but nothing is showing on EPF website for first companies status. It shows the below status for my second company's PF transfer request:
Status : Claim Form 13 for Transfer to New Account Number: AGAINST Old Member Account has been rejected. Rejection letter is under dispatch/ dispatched to address in your claim.

Now I want to withdraw the account as I do not find it feasible that i would easily be able to transfer the amount.

All the info provided would really help, just a quick question that after filling the Form 19 & form 10c whom should I send the forms, is it the previous employer or to the EPF office of the company's head quarter (whose code exist in my PF account number e.g. MAS for Chennai on my payslip). And is it just 2 papers i.e. form 19 & form 10c that I need ot send or is it anything else, I need to send to them. Kindly assist. Your assistance wil be really appreciated.

    Regards,
    Ankit

I think its necessary. If you dont want to withdraw EPS, then you have to mention it specifically in 10C

Since the total service years is less than 5 years, your PF withdrawal will become taxable if you withdraw .The tax will be according to your income slab and will apply for the financial year in which its withdrawn. Hi Senthil,

You have to fill Form 10c for EPS withdrawal. You are eligible to withdraw EPS only if the total service period is less than 10 years. Once, the service period crosses 10 years, the withdrawal option ceases. Hope it helps you.

if the employee completes 10 years of the service, the withdrawal option ends and the member becomes eligible for receiving pension after the age of 58.

Hi Neha, you article is really helpful to me.. keep it up.. I resigned from my indian job and i am currently working abroad..I filled form 19 and 10c before leaving india...my question is how much time it will take to get pf amount in my account... as per epfonline my claim is submitted on 22nd January 2013. so do i get money in feb'13? Also, as per my knowledge pf amount is directly credited to my bank account and no cheque processing and all that right? Final one is, suppose i get my money in april'13 then my total income in india for new financial year is zero so do i have to pay tax on pf amount? Thanks in advance..

Hi Npower, it takes around 1-2 months to get your money in ur account. Yes it will be credited directly. I am not sure on the tax liability of ur EPF.

Is the tax already deducted from the amount transfered to the bank account? Or is the responsibility of paying tax on EPF is on us? If it is the later, it will be helpful if someone shows using an example how to compute the tax.they

Tax is usually not deducted from the amount we get back. Its our responsibility to pay taxes on the EPF amount as per the income slabs.

Income on EPF return is not taxable if the account holder closes his/her account after completing 5years service.. This is my understanding, if this seems wrong please correct it.

Yes, thats right. Income on EPF return is not taxable if the account holder closes his/her account after completing 5years service.
